Team Overview
General
Hong Kong, China first appeared in the men's water polo tournament at the Asian Games in 1954 in Manila, where they lost the bronze medal match to Indonesia and finished fourth out of six teams. This remains the only time they have contested a medal match at the Games, as their fourth-place finishes in 1958 and 1962 both came when the tournament was held in a round-robin format.
In total, the Hong Kongers have competed at 11 editions of the Asian Games, including each of the last four tournaments. They have struggled at the Games in recent years, and at Indonesia 2018 they were ranked ninth out of nine teams after losing all four of their preliminary round matches.
Drawn in Group B at the 2023 Asian Water Polo Championships, the Hong Kong, China team's highlight of the tournament was a 15-14 win over the Philippines in the preliminary round. They lost the rest of their matches, including a rematch with the Philippines in the seventh place play-off that saw the team finish eighth and last. They also ranked eighth at the 2022 edition of the tournament, where 10 teams competed.
