The team secured gold at the first two tournaments, silver in 2006, and three consecutive bronze medals between 2010 and 2018.
In 2018 their three group stage wins included a victory over Sri Lanka before they overcame Malaysia in the quarterfinals. They lost out to eventual gold medallists Hong Kong, China in the last four, before defeating Sri Lanka for a second time, 36-14, to take the final spot on the podium.
The Republic of Korea were runners-up in the Asian Series in both 2021 and 2022. At the 2021 edition, which was played as a single tournament, they defeated Japan 21-14 in the semifinals but lost the final 33-7 to Hong Kong, China. In 2022 they were also knocked out by the Hong Kongers at two of the three tournaments, losing in the semifinals in Thailand and in the final as hosts of the Korea 7s. The Koreans claimed a top-three overall ranking in six of the eight editions of the series between 2014 and 2022.
The team made their return to the World Cup in 2022 after a 17-year absence. They lost to Wales in the preliminary round and were eventually ranked 21st. At the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, the team's Olympic debut saw them lose all five of their matches and end the tournament ranked last of 12 teams.
