He began playing table tennis at age five, before pursuing the sport further from age six under coach Vahed Malubhai at the Sufaiz TT Academy in Surat, India. (The Bridge YouTube channel, 29 May 2021; timesofindia, 20 Jan 2018)

His parents encouraged him to take up the sport. "We had a table tennis table at our home, so my parents used to play on weekends. One day I became interested, [but] I was not even the height of the table. So I stood behind the table, I think six or seven feet, and whenever the ball came I was able to return it. I used to hit the wall and the ceiling above it and then the ball went onto the next side. So like this, I was able to return the ball three or four times. That's how I got interested, as a hobby at home." (The Bridge YouTube channel, 29 May 2021; scroll, 09 Feb 2018)
