Hong Kong, China won bronze at the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia behind the People's Republic of China and gold medallists Japan. It was their fourth consecutive bronze in the event at the Games and sixth medal in total, after they also claimed bronze in 1986 and silver at the 1994 Games.

The Hong Kong, China team made their third Olympic appearance in the event at Tokyo 2020 and ranked 15th of 15 teams. At the 2023 World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, the team swam the 12th-fastest time in the heats. It was not enough to qualify for the final, but it was Hong Kong, China's best time in six appearances at the world championships since 2003.

Hong Kong, China won silver at the Asian championships in 2009, and bronze in 2012 and 2016.
