He was inspired to try the sport by his father. "When I was younger, I spent more time on the field than I did at home. I played every sport - cricket, football, badminton, basketball, hockey and was good at them all, but nothing excited me. But that's till I discovered sailing. I watched my father sail and eventually followed his footsteps to pick up the ore and manoeuvre the mast. The thrill, joy and excitement that sport gave me is still vivid and has been a driving force ever since." (Instagram profile, 31 Dec 2021; indulgexpress, 23 Apr 2021)

General
PARENTAL INSPIRATION
He dedicated his achievement of securing a quota spot for India ahead of the 2020 Olympic Games to his father Ramachandran. His father was a competitive sailor and dreamed of competing at the Olympic Games, but eventually began to focus on coaching. "I always wanted to achieve what my dad could not, so I am following his footsteps and he has given me the pathway to the Olympics. He has been through a lot to make me what I am today. His dream was going to the Olympics, but unfortunately that didn't happen. So he is living his dream through me." (olympics, 12 Apr 2021; newindianexpress, 22 Apr 2021; firstpost, 09 Apr 2021)

TRAINING IN MALTA
In 2017 he began training at the Sail Coach Academy in Malta, living with Irish Olympic coach Trevor Millar. In addition to running the academy, Millar has also served as Saravanan's mind coach. "He trains my mind. I live in an apartment with him in Malta. We cook every day. I cook some Indian food sometimes for him. He is not married and his brother lives in Ireland, his native country, so we are his family here." (SailCoach Making You Better Facebook page, 22 Aug 2022; olympics, 24 Jul 2021, 20 May 2021; firstpost, 09 Apr 2021)
