Team Overview

General
Japan have never finished outside the top four in the all-around team competition at the Asian Games, but they are yet to win a gold medal. Silver medal performances in 1998 and 2006 were followed by a third-place finish in Guangzhou in 2010. The team placed fourth in 2002, 2014, and 2018.

The Japanese team have competed at the Olympic Games on five occasions without finishing on the podium. They secured their best result at the 2000 Games in Sydney, where they were ranked fifth. As hosts of the 2020 Games in Tokyo, they qualified for the final but could only finish eighth.

Japan claimed silver on their world championship debut in 1975 to become the first non-European team to win an all-around medal at the tournament. They had to wait 42 years to win their second world championship medal, securing bronze in 2017 in Pesaro, Italy. Their third and most recent podium finish came in 2019 in Baku, where they won silver.
