Team Overview
General
Malaysia claimed bronze at the first Asian Games women's hockey tournament in 1982, but have not returned to the podium since. The team ended a 20-year absence from the Games at the 2006 edition in Doha, and have ranked fifth at each tournament since their return.
In 2018 they recorded wins over Hong Kong, China [8-0] and Chinese Taipei [11-0] in the group stage, as well as a 2-2 draw with the People's Republic of China and a 3-1 defeat to eventual gold medallists Japan. This saw Malaysia narrowly miss out on the semifinals on goal difference before they overcame Thailand 2-0 in the fifth place play-off.
The team has also produced a string of fifth-place finishes at the five Asia Cups since 2007. At the most recent edition in 2022, they finished third in their group and recorded wins over Indonesia and Thailand in the classification bracket. Malaysia's highest Asia Cup ranking of third was at the inaugural event in 1985, which was in a round-robin format.
Malaysia dominated the South East Asian Games between 1999 and 2023, winning eight gold medals in that period. They defeated Thailand 4-1 in the final at the 2023 Games in Cambodia.
