Team Overview
General
In 1951 India claimed gold on home soil in the inaugural men's Asian Games football tournament. The team went on to reclaim gold in 1962 and took bronze in 1970 to secure India a spot on the podium at three of the first six editions of the Asian Games.
Despite India's early success at the Games, they have only advanced to the knockout rounds once since 1982. In 2010 they qualified from the group stage as one of the best third-placed teams, but were beaten 5-0 by eventual champions Japan in the last 16. In 2014 they were eliminated after losing both their group matches, and the Indian team did not participate at the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia.
India competed at four consecutive Olympic tournaments between 1948 and 1960 but have not made an appearance since. They came close to winning a medal at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne but were denied by Bulgaria, who defeated them 3-0 in the third place play-off.
