Team Overview
General
Japan won gold in the inaugural Asian Games men's team foil event in 1974 in Tehran. They have finished on the podium at each edition of the Games they have appeared at since then, although they had to wait until Incheon 2014 to win their second title. At the 2018 Games in Indonesia, they lost to Hong Kong, China in the semifinals and shared bronze with the People's Republic of China.
The Japanese team's only medal at the Olympic Games is a silver from London 2012, where they were beaten by Italy in the final. They came close to another podium finish at the 2020 Games in Tokyo but they lost their semifinal match to France and were defeated by the United States of America in the third place bout.
Japan arrive in Hangzhou as the reigning world champions, having secured the title at the 2023 World Championships in Milan with victory over the Republic of Korea in the final. It was the first time Japan had won gold at the tournament. They are also the current Asian champions, with their victory in 2023 marking their fourth title overall since 2003 and their third in a row following victories in 2019 and 2022.
