He sustained a knee injury that led him to give up running and switch to race walking in 2018. (pib, 04 Oct 2022)
:
He switched from running to race walking in 2018. He initially wanted to become a marathon runner after being inspired by Indian athletes at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. "It was the 2012 Olympics, and sports were in the limelight. A senior told me, 'You can make a career in sport', and I started training on a track." (hindustantimes, 04 Oct 2022; pib, 04 Oct 2022)
:
He began race walking after a knee injury forced him to stop running. "The injury wasn't healing because I didn't have money for a good diet. But at that time a coach told me to shift to race walk because it was a less stressful sport for my knees." (sportstar, 04 Oct 2022)

Additional Information

General
PREVIOUS OCCUPATIONS
He joined his father to work as a manual labourer in Uttar Pradesh, India, during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Previously he worked as a waiter and also stitched jute bags for courier agencies. "The hardest moment of my life was when I was a waiter. I was very unwell at that time, but I was still working because I needed the money. It taught me what human life is all about. I used to dig roads as I worked under the MNREGA [Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act] where I used to do a lot of digging to make new roads in Uttar Pradesh. That will stay with me forever. The [COVID-19] lockdown period was tough for us and it has made me more determined to achieve my goals. I often think how even after being a national-level athlete one does not get full-time support, only when you become a star and Olympian does financial help come your way. The race walking got me a job in the Indian Army and I am hopeful that because of my achievements in sports I would be able to break the poverty line of my family in the coming times."
