Team Overview
General
The Islamic Republic of Iran won bronze at the first Asian Games men's 3x3 basketball tournament in 2018, which was an U23 competition. After a strong start that saw the Iranians progress from Pool D with five wins from five games, they edged past Chinese Taipei 18-17 in the quarterfinals. The People's Republic of China proved too strong in the semifinals with the Iranian team losing out 21-19, but they would bounce back to comfortably beat Thailand 21-7 and secure a place on the podium.
The senior Iranian team posted a third-place finish at the inaugural Asia Cup [then the Asia Championship] in 2013. However, they struggled to build on that performance in four subsequent appearances at the tournament. At the 2023 Asia Cup in Singapore, they made it back to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2013, but lost out to New Zealand 20-18.
